Our editorial principles
- Every legal fact has a source and a verification date.
- Every medical page names the guidelines it is based on and says that medical decisions are made together with a doctor.
- Every clinic listing comes from an official registry or the clinic's own published information.
- We describe the law, legal options and legal places to get care, in neutral language.
- We do not sell, source or broker medicines, and we do not describe ways to end a pregnancy outside legal care.
- We publish no testimonials, ratings or figures we cannot source.
Legal sources
National laws
The primary source for every country and US state card is the official text of the law: statutes and codes published in official journals or legislative records, constitutional provisions and regulations. Each card links to the official text where it is available online.
Court decisions
Decisions of constitutional, supreme and federal courts can change how a law applies or stop it from taking effect. Cards cite the decision and its date.
WHO Global Abortion Policies Database
The Global Abortion Policies Database, maintained by the World Health Organization and its partners, collects abortion laws and policies of countries around the world in a comparable structure. We use it to cross-check our country cards.
Center for Reproductive Rights
The Center for Reproductive Rights publishes a map of the world's abortion laws, grouped into categories. We use it to cross-check the categories on our world abortion law map.
Official health authorities
Health ministries, public health services and state health departments publish how care is organized, who provides it and what it costs. We use them for public services, costs and procedures.
Medical sources
Our method pages, such as medication abortion, procedural abortion and abortion aftercare, are based on international and national clinical guidance.
- World Health Organization, Abortion care guideline (2022)
- American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)
- Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG)
- International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO)
- Collège National des Gynécologues et Obstétriciens Français (CNGOF) and Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS)
- Deutsche Gesellschaft für Gynäkologie und Geburtshilfe (DGGG)
Our medical pages explain how care works in general terms. They contain no medical advice and no dosage instructions. Medical decisions are made together with a doctor. Our article on the WHO abortion care guideline summarizes what the guideline covers.
How we verify law cards
Reading the official text
For each card we read the law itself, not a summary of it, and record the gestational limit, how weeks are counted, the grounds, the steps before care, rules for minors and telehealth rules.
Cross-checking
We compare the result with the WHO Global Abortion Policies Database, the Center for Reproductive Rights and official health authority information. When sources disagree, we follow the official text and the most recent court decision, and say on the card what applies in practice.
Verification date
Each card shows the date we last checked it against its sources. We check cards regularly and whenever a change is announced. Changes are published in our abortion law news.
Conservative wording
When a rule is unclear or in dispute, the card says so and explains which rule applies today, instead of guessing.
How we verify clinics
A clinic or organization appears in the abortion clinics directory only if it provides care or support legally where it works.
- Basic listings come from official health registries, public authority lists or the clinic's own website, with the source and date shown.
- A clinic that claims its profile passes a license or registration check against the official register of its country or state before its profile goes live.
- Prices, week limits, languages and appointment availability are published by the clinic or taken from official tariffs, and show where they come from.
- Listings are checked again at regular intervals. A listing that can no longer be confirmed is removed until it is verified again.
- Telehealth services are shown only to visitors in the places where they are licensed and where telehealth care is legal.
Helplines and emergency numbers
Every helpline and emergency number on the site is checked at its official source and stored with the date we verified it. A number we cannot verify is not shown.
Editorial independence
Abortion.io is funded by subscriptions paid by clinics, clinic networks, telehealth services and support organizations. People looking for care never pay. A paid plan gives a clinic control over its profile, Featured placement in the directory and inquiries, and that is all it gives.
- A paid plan never changes legal facts on any page.
- A paid plan never changes the order of jurisdictions in a law card or a checker result, which follows the law and distance only.
- Featured listings are always marked Featured.
- No clinic or organization reviews, edits or approves our legal or medical content.
- We do not accept payment for articles, news entries or links.
Read our pricing for clinics to see exactly what each plan includes.
Corrections
If you see an error in a law card, a medical page, a listing or a helpline number, write to [email protected] with the page and, if possible, a link to the official source. We check every report against the source. When we correct a law card, we update its verification date, and when a correction changes the meaning of a legal fact, we note it in our abortion law news.
What our information is not
Abortion.io gives general information about the law and about care. It is not legal advice and not medical advice. For your own situation, an official service or a lawyer in your country can advise you, and medical decisions are made together with a doctor.
