Privacy in short
- People looking for information or care never create an account and never fill in a form about their health.
- The legal options checker computes your result in your browser. What you enter is not sent to us.
- We do not use tracking, third-party analytics, advertising pixels or social media plugins.
- We set only strictly necessary cookies, so there is no cookie banner.
- Accounts exist only for clinics and support organizations, with the minimum data needed to run them.
- We do not sell personal data and do not use it for advertising.
Who is responsible for your data
The controller of personal data processed through this website is the administrator of the abortion.io service. You can reach the administrator about anything in this policy at [email protected].
If you are looking for information or care
No accounts and no health forms
You can read every page, use the maps, the law cards, the guides, the directory and the checker without an account. We never ask about your pregnancy, your health or your plans in a form.
The legal options checker
The checker runs entirely in your browser on a published dataset of laws. Your choices, such as your country, US state, weeks and whether you can travel, stay on your device. When you open a result link, these choices are placed after the "#" sign in the address. Browsers do not send that part of an address to a website's server, so it does not reach us and does not appear in any of our logs.
Technical data when you visit
Like every website, our server receives technical information to deliver a page, such as the address requested, the time, the type of browser and your IP address. We do not store your IP address in readable form. Where we keep it to protect the service against abuse, we keep only a salted hash, a one-way code that cannot be turned back into the address. Technical logs are kept for a short time and then deleted.
Inquiries to a clinic or organization
Some profiles let you send an inquiry to a clinic or support organization. If you choose to do so, your message goes to the team of that clinic or organization. We ask only for what they need to reply, such as a way to contact you and your message, and never for health details in a form. Inquiries are kept for a short time and then deleted. The clinic or organization handles your inquiry under its own privacy rules once it receives it.
Links to other websites
Law cards, guides and profiles link to official sources, clinics and organizations. Those websites have their own privacy practices. Opening them is your choice and we do not pass any information to them.
Cookies
We set only cookies that are strictly necessary for the website to work. Because nothing optional is set, there is no cookie banner and nothing to accept or refuse.
| Cookie | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Session | Keeps the website working while you browse, and keeps clinic accounts signed in | Ends with the session or after a short period of inactivity |
| Security token | Protects forms against requests sent from other websites | Same as the session |
| Language | Remembers the language you chose | Up to one year |
We do not use cookies or similar technologies for analytics, advertising, profiling or tracking across websites.
If you create a clinic or organization account
Accounts are only for clinics, clinic networks, telehealth services and support organizations. When you create one, we process:
- Your work email address
- Your role, such as clinic, clinic network, telehealth service, support organization or other
- The name of your organization, if you choose to give it
- Your country and the language of the page you signed up on
- The one-time code we send you, stored only in a protected form and valid for a short time
- How you reached the sign-up, such as the page or campaign link, so we know which pages help clinics find us
- Your IP address, only as a salted hash, to protect sign-up against abuse
When your profile is verified and you use a paid plan, we also process the license or registration details you provide, the profile content you publish, the names and work email addresses of team members you invite, and billing records.
We use this data to create and secure your account, send you the code and service emails, verify your license, run your profile and plan, issue invoices and answer your messages. We do not send marketing emails from other companies and we do not sell or rent your data.
Legal bases under the GDPR
Where the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) applies, we rely on:
- Performance of a contract or steps before entering into one, for clinic and organization accounts, profiles and plans
- Legal obligations, for invoices and accounting records
- Legitimate interests, for keeping the website secure, preventing abuse and understanding which pages bring clinics to sign up, in a way that does not track visitors
Information about abortion and pregnancy can be health data, a special category under the GDPR. We are designed so that we do not collect it from people seeking information: there are no visitor accounts, no health forms and the checker stays in your browser.
Who receives data
We share personal data only with service providers that help us run the website, under contracts that require them to protect it and use it only on our instructions:
- A hosting provider in the European Union, which runs our servers
- A payment operator, which processes card payments for clinic plans
- An email delivery provider, which sends codes, service emails and invoices
- The clinic or organization you choose to contact, which receives your inquiry
We may disclose data when the law requires it. We review every such request and disclose only what we are legally obliged to disclose. We do not hold visitors' checker entries, health information or browsing histories, so we cannot disclose them.
Transfers outside the European Economic Area
Some service providers may process data outside the European Economic Area. Where that happens, we use safeguards recognized under the GDPR, such as an adequacy decision or standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep data
- Checker entries are never stored by us.
- Technical logs with hashed IP addresses are kept for a short time for security and then deleted.
- Inquiries to clinics and organizations are kept for a short time to allow a reply and then deleted.
- Sign-ups that are never confirmed are deleted after a short period.
- Account and profile data are kept while the account is active and deleted after the account is closed, except what we must keep by law.
- Invoices and billing records are kept for the period required by tax and accounting law.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access your data, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to processing, to data portability, and to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. You can also lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, in particular in the country where you live or work.
Several US states have laws that protect consumer health data and personal data more generally. Depending on where you live, they may give you rights to know what data is collected, to access and delete it, and to refuse its sale or sharing. We apply the same approach everywhere: we do not collect health data from visitors, we do not sell personal data and we do not share it for advertising.
To use any of these rights, write to [email protected]. We may ask you to confirm that the request comes from the account holder before we act on it, and we reply within the time the law requires.
How we protect data
All pages are served over an encrypted connection. Access to account data is limited to the people who need it to run the service. Codes and IP addresses are stored only in protected, one-way form. Clinic teams see only the inquiries sent to their own profile.
Young people
Our information pages can be read by anyone. Clinic and organization accounts are for professionals acting for their organization.
Changes to this policy
When we change this policy, we publish the new version here and update the date at the top. If a change affects clinic and organization accounts in an important way, we tell account holders by email.
