What abortion funds are
Abortion funds are usually independent, community based organizations run by staff and volunteers and financed by donations. They exist because the cost of care, and of getting to it, keeps many people from the care they choose. Some cover a city or a state, some a whole region, and some help people who travel from countries where abortion is restricted to countries where it is legal.
- They help pay part or all of the cost of abortion care at a legal provider
- Many also help with transport, accommodation, childcare and food during travel
- Some offer emotional support or someone to accompany you
- They do not judge the reasons for an abortion and do not ask you to justify your decision
How abortion funds work
Every fund has its own rules, but the process is often similar. It usually starts once you have contacted a clinic and know the price, because funds help with a specific appointment.
Get a price from a clinic
Contact a legal provider, book an appointment and ask what the care will cost and what is included. If you have insurance, ask what it covers. Our abortion cost guide explains what affects the price.
Contact a fund
Call, write or use the fund's own intake process. Funds usually ask for basic information such as where you are, the clinic, the date, the cost and how much you can contribute. Questions differ between funds.
Agree on the support
Many funds pay their part directly to the clinic, and some combine their help with other funds or the clinic's own reduced prices. A fund may not be able to cover everything, so asking more than one fund is common.
- Ask early, because funds often have limited budgets that run out
- Have your appointment details ready when you call
- You can ask the clinic which funds it works with
Practical support beyond money
Practical support organizations focus on everything around the appointment. For people traveling across a border or to another state, this help can matter as much as paying for the care itself.
- Booking and paying for transport, such as buses, trains or flights
- Accommodation near the clinic, sometimes with volunteer hosts
- Childcare, food and local transport on the day of the appointment
- Language help and explanations of how care works in another country
- Information about documents needed to travel and to be treated as a patient from abroad
Our travel for abortion guide explains legal care abroad, including which countries accept patients from abroad and until which week.
Finding abortion funds in the directory
The Abortion.io directory lists support organizations next to clinics, so you see financial help in the same place as the care. Each entry shows the area it covers, the kind of help it offers, the languages spoken and how to contact it, taken from the organization's own published information with the source and the date we verified it.
- Filter by country, US state or city
- Filter by type of help, such as cost of care, travel or accommodation
- Filter by the languages staff speak
In the United States and Canada, the National Abortion Federation Hotline, 1-800-772-9100, gives information about providers and financial help.
Privacy and safety when asking for help
Legitimate funds do not ask for payment to access their help and do not sell medicines. They ask only for the information they need to help with your appointment. Abortion.io does not collect any information from people looking for help, there is no account and no form about your health, and the checker runs in your browser.
For abortion funds and support organizations
List your organization where people search for legal care, in all eight languages of the site, so that financial and practical help appears next to the clinics and the law that applies to each visitor. A verified profile shows your area, your types of help, eligibility, languages and how to reach you. See how it works for support organizations.
